Resources For Rebels

Here’s my list of practical resources for all us break free rebels.

These are all services that I’ve used myself or else services that I’ve heard are really good (I let you know which ones I don’t have any direct experience with).

Investing in Cryptocurrencies

To get started with investing in Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, first get yourself a free online wallet at blockchain.info

They’re the world’s biggest providers of online Bitcion wallets and their wallet is easy to set up and use.

When you’ve done that, get yourself a cryptocurrency exchange account at an exchange such as

cex.io or coinbase.com

Web-hosting  / Server Providers

If you’re starting out with a website for the first time and you’re not an IT professional, then I’d recommend using one of the top hosting services such as Hostgator or Bluehost. These services feature an easy-to-use web-based interface that you access via your web-browser. They make setting up a website with WordPress and maintaining it very straightforward.

I used Hostgator for some years and have never had any big problems. They are a reliable service,  support issues are dealt with promptly and there’s a good help system.

I’m not personally familiar with Bluehost, but I’ve heard from other people that they have a good reputation as well, so I’ve included them to give you a viable alternative in case you want to take a look at them.

Here are the URLs:

www.bluehost.com

I now run my own show using my own server at Vultr.com. They’re a virtual hosting provider rather than a specific web-hosting service. This means you’re on your own. This is really only something for people who know how to install things like LAMP and aren’t fazed by setting up a virtual server from the ground up with no practically assistance – although Vultr make it pretty easy.

the advantage over a web-hosting provider is that you have full control over your machine. You can install software and services and configure it pretty well as you wish, unlike with a web-hosting service where you are restricted. Also, for IT tech types like me, running your own server is much more fun. And it’s a bit cheaper too.

Affiliate Marketing & E-Commerce

If you’re interested in getting a good practical grounding in online affiliate marketing then Affilorama is a great resource. Check out
www.affilorama.com

If you’re interested in starting an e-commerce business on e-Bay then check out Skip McGrath’s eBay course:

For email newsletter and customer list building, check out www.aweber.com and www.mailchimp.com

Online Accounting

For online financial book-keeping, check out

www.kashflow.com

I’ve used kashflow. They’re a UK-based company. There are also a number of other providers, particularly for the US market, but I have no direct experience with them.

But two good ones are www.quickbooks.com and  www.freshbooks.com

Learning A New Language

If you’re thinking of moving to one of those great digital nomad and location independent startup locations such as Berlin. Germany or Chiang Mai in Thailand and you want to learn the language quickly and easily, then I can definitely recommend the following downloadable audio courses from Pod101:

www.germanpod101.com

The Germanpod course is especially popular with literally hundreds of thousands of downloads. I myself learned German using the audio method so I can vouch for its effectiveness.

I also learned some Thai, though not with the thaipod101.com course. But since the German version is so good, I think there’s a good chance the Thai version is also worth checking out. Here’s the link:

Travel Health Insurance

For travel health insurance when you’re travelling or digital nomading, I can recommend World Nomads. I’ve already used them a couple of times and they’ve been very good. I’ve put in a couple of claims and they were dealt with quickly.

I know some people have experienced delays and problems, but this seems to be the case with most if not all insurance companies. Its just the name of the game.

The good thing about World Nomads is that they do everything online and they are – in my experience – fairly efficient. At least I’ve had no complaints so far.
